Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hi Kerry, Aside from all of the missed call in last nights Bruins/Rangers game, the most puzzling one was when two players on opposing teams were struck by high sticks on the same play. The other night, Tyler Seguin was hit with a high stick and almost at the same time Seguins stick came up and hit Chris Kreider as well. Both players went to the ice holding their face, yet there was no call on either side. What is the correct ruling for that? Should each offending player have gotten a high sticking penalty off-setting? Or if one caused the other to occur as he was reacting, is there cause and effect rule? Finally, what I was really curious about; if each player was assessed a penalty for high-sticking, but one player was cut and one wasnt, would there be a power play for the bloodied player? Thanks, keep your rulings coming! Tim Rasmusson Tim: That really was a bizarre play; the likes of which I have seen before. The correct ruling on the play should have been a double minor penalty assessed to Steve Eminger of the NY Rangers for cutting/injuring (as reported) the face of Tyler Seguin. No penalty would result to Seguin for the normal follow through of his shot that cut Chris Kreider. Injury to both players occurred almost simultaneously as Seguin was in the act of shooting the puck on goal with Chris Kreider fronting the Bruins player for an attempted shot block. Rule 60.1 provides a caveat to the premise that players must be in control of their sticks at all times. The rule specifically states; "However, a player is permitted accidental contact on an opponent if the act is committed as a normal windup or follow through of a shooting motion, or accidental contact on the opposing center who is bent over during the course of a face-off." The only high-sticking infraction deserving of a penalty on this play was committed by Steve Eminger. It would appear that in the absence of a minor penalty at the very least, this high-sticking incident was undetected by the on-ice Officials. At least one other missed high-sticking infraction occurred very early in the game when Rangers Captain, Ryan Callahan finished a check on Zdeno Chara and cut the Bruins Captain for stitches between the eyes. When a stick reaches the height of Charas head there is little doubt it could only be determined a high stick! That is if the Referees or Linesmen detect it? On this play Chara advanced the puck up-ice from deep in the corner to the left of Tuukka Rask. Ryan Callahan was in a glide path to finish a check on the big defenceman. All eyes of the officiating crew followed the path of the puck exiting the zone and a gap of coverage resulted on the finish of the check. The closest Referee to the play was on the opposite side along the goal line. Since the puck moved beyond the top of the circle and exited the zone he should have remained focused on Callahan and Chara. The linesmen would instinctively focus on the puck as it exited the Bruins zone. The Referee in the neutral zone was now responsible for action on the puck as it entered the neutral zone. The penalty box attendants in Madison Square Garden were not nearly as busy compared to the medical staff of both teams throughout this wild contest. The Rangers find themselves with their backs are against the wall. If they are to fight another day Henrik Lundqvist will have to be even better tonight, if such a thing is even humanly possible. One thing is certain; hes going to need some help and a huge effort from every one of his teammates if the Rangers stand a chance. It would also be advisable for them to keep their sticks down—you cant run the risk that a high-stick infraction will be detected.Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic .Y. - Nelson Mandela will be honoured by the New York Yankees with a plaque in Monument Park. Wholesale NFL Jerseys China . Louis Blues absence from top spot in the TSN.LAS VEGAS -- She became the first American woman boxer to win a gold medal in the London Olympics, then did it again a few months ago in Rio.Nice trinkets, but Claressa Shields has bigger things in mind. Way bigger.A one-in-a-century fighter, Shields said. The brash middleweight from Flint, Michigan, makes her pro debut Saturday night on the undercard of the Andre Ward-Sergey Kovalev light heavyweight title clash. Shell do it without headgear but with the same two-minute rounds as in the amateurs. And she will do it against a familiar opponent in Baltimore boxer Franchon Crews, a top amateur she beat on her way to earning a spot on the 2012 Olympic team.Very seldom do you see someone making their pro debut with this level of fight, said Mark Taffet, who is Shields co-manager. The idea is to use the first year and make it impactful in a way that hasnt been done for a female fighter.Theres no shortage of big plans for Shields, and seemingly no lack of confidence that the 21-year-old can succeed where other women boxers havent. But theres also no guarantee Shields can be a breakout fighter who can bring the kind of interest to the fractured world of womens boxing that Ronda Rousey has to the UFC.It may be a longshot, but thats not stopping Shields from envisioning womens boxing having a different future. She believes she can someday headline pay-per-view cards of her own like Ward-Kovalev at the glittering new T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip.I consider myself a pay-per-view attraction now, Shields said. The more you see me box, the more youll like me. I want to fight 12 rounds. If a girl could withstand me for 12 rounds, that would be a good fight.Shields will make her debut in a four-rounder that wont be on the pay-per-view portion of the card. Taffett said her bout, expected to take place with few people in the arena, will be streamed online and put on specialty channels in an effort to get people to buy the Kovalev-Ward card.ddddddddddddCrews also will make her pro debut in the fight. She is an eight-time USA Boxing national champion and a silver medalist at the 2012 world championships.Shields, whose story of rising out of poverty with her fists was the subject of a documentary film after her first gold medal win, said she wants to fight 10 times in the next year to build her resume and get more people interested in her.I believe 150 percent in my boxing ability, she said. I know Im a great fighter. I fight better than 90 percent of the men who box now. I just know that, and Im not at my best yet.Shields was miffed after winning her gold medal in London that she didnt receive the kind of endorsements and attention given gymnast Gabby Douglas. Things were a bit better in Rio, where she became the first American boxer to defend an Olympic title and won the Val Barker Trophy as the tournaments top overall fighter.Instead of continuing to draw a $5,000 monthly stipend from USA Boxing to go for a third gold in Tokyo four years from now, though, she decided to turn pro. Despite womens boxing receiving little attention in recent years and her bout not on pay-per-view, Shields isnt deterred.Taffet, who used to be head of pay-per-view for HBO, said he signed on to help manage her because he is a big believer.Shes going to make her mark not just on womens boxing, but all of boxing like the way weve seen recently in MMA, he said. Its a new world, and theres a new sheriff in town. ' ' '
